Not far from the fovea centralis - the most sensitive spot on the retina - there is a blind spot, which is unable to see anything. We have one in each eye, but the eyes are so adjusted, that when one eye is blind, the other sees. This blind spot is at the entrance of the optic nerve, the fibers of which convey all the visual information to the sight-centers of the brain. In this case it is necessary, then, to sacrifice some portion of reality to recognize all the rest. My Polish experience suggests the existence of similar blind spots in our ability to formulate emotions and thought patterns. There are singular thoughts never realized, but essential to our understanding of everything. Their absence constitutes the foundation of our mental being.
